Blankets for Canada : Thank you very much for your generous donations of wool, the beautifully knitted and crocheted squares and the completed blankets. On June 27 th more than 20 blankets will be on display in the sanctuary along with many ‘Prayer Shawls’. A very special Thank You is extended to the members of the Shawl Ministry who assembled most of the blankets. Without their help this presentation would not have been possible. The blankets will be delivered to Phoenix Safe House by the end of June. Thank you, everyone!
We thank the following ladies for their dedication to the Shawl Ministry: Marg Blair, Verna Dunwald, Joan Fleming, Thelma Forbes, Helen Griffith, Sharon Hunter, Jean McDougall, Maureen Pidwerbesky, Raye Phillipson, Vera Runions, Kay Shillington, Jean Siegers and Gloria Angle. They will not be gathering during the summer, but will start up again in September. We also thank Norma Nelson and Hazel Romfo for their dedication to Blankets for Canada.

MINUTE FOR MISSION
General Council 101
Have you ever planned a meeting for 400 people? Or an event for 700? That’s what The United Church of Canada does every three years for its General Council meeting. The meeting is an important part of this unique United Church of ours, and it is funded by Mission and Service.
At General Council about 365 commissioners from across the church are joined by volunteer leaders and members of the youth forum, ecumenical guests, observers from other churches, special speakers, and resource people: about 700 people!
The General Council meeting is key to our work. The commissioners make decisions and create policies to shape our denomination for years to come. They decide on human resources policy, rule on petitions from the presbyteries and Conferences, and choose who will be our Moderator for the following three years. They debate social issues, listen to ecumenical guests, take part in worship, and act as the public face of The United Church of Canada.
Although the next meeting isn’t until 2012, planning is already under way. Meeting space in Ottawa must be found and equipment arranged and delivered. Agendas and workbooks are produced. Travel arrangements, accommodations, and menus must be considered. The planning takes many hours of volunteer and staff time, and it’s expensive.
Through the Mission and Service Fund we support the work of the General Council. Your Mission and Service Fund gifts make sure that all parts of the United Church have a voice in the future of our church.
We are a united church!
Ask for a blessing on the work and well-being
of the Moderator of The United Church of Canada
and on all those who serve the denomination at the
General Council meeting.
OTHER NEWS
Call for 2012 Canadian Church Calendar Photos – seeking excellent quality photos, slides or digital images of stained glass windows or details of windows of United Churches across the country. Entry form can be found on the bulletin board in Wesley Hall. Deadline October 4, 2010.
The Observer Magazine - To receive your copy or to renew your current subscription, please use the special envelope found on the literature tables. This subscription will cover the period Aug. 2010 to July 2011. All payments should be in the church office by June 30 th.
Stained Glass Window Project - As many of you will have heard, the Board has approved the final stage of the window restoration project. The windows are 75 years old and virtually falling apart. We were not sure just how long Robert Weissman, the gentleman doing the restoration, was going to be available to us. He required a firm commitment from us to continue with the work and for this reason, the decision was made rather hastily. In the past, we have raised the necessary funds and then proceeded with the work but this time we felt it necessary to proceed in a timely fashion. We received the offer of an interest free loan with no definite term from an anonymous donor and the Board gratefully accepted that offer. In this way, we will be indebted to the anonymous donor and not putting undue stress on our daily financial operations. A plan is being put in place to do the necessary fundraising starting with the Spaghetti dinner and dessert auction on June 25th. Watch for fundraising events in the future and if you have any ideas about fundraising, please let one of the Board members know.
Parking for church can be a problem for people who have difficulty walking a distance or handling hills. As part of your fitness program, why not park on Third Street or up towards Mario’s if you are able? And for those with small cars who can walk on a level surface, we now can offer space for nine cars in the new lot across from Gainsborough Studios at the west end of the block. We have permission from the manager to use that space on Sundays which will enable parking for larger cars on the street.
